Photographing extended families and cousins is such a unique and fun experience I get to enjoy as a family photographer. Being near Washington DC, I seem to get some families here on their vacations, others who just happen to live here and have relatives coming in for the holidays. Either way I love getting to see big families come together in a unique celebration being themselves and having fun. While the amount of people involved adds a different dynamic to a family session, extended family photos are normally SO MUCH FUN. Most of the people haven’t seen each other in a bit, so everyone is normally laughing and joking around – they’re rarely a formal event and are much more joyful and happy than one might think.
This extended family here is a perfect example of this! Half of the family had traveled here from England, coming together for a holiday and were just amazingly fun. The cousins hardly stopped laughing together, were joyful and laid back, and made photographing (even in the middle of an insane lightning storm) a total party. This family is truly one of the best – so kind and lovely, beautiful and sweet and funny too. The kids started inside while it poured rain, and then when the rain finally stopped 5 minutes before sunset we ran outside to get some outdoor images. Everyone was so excited that the rain finally passed and we weren’t sure if that would happen. I loved being able to photograph everyone around their beautiful home in the Washington DC metro area, and that we connected these two families over the pond.
