Photographing babies as they grow is my favorite only second to photographing Motherhood sessions. Moms usually are behind the scenes, behind the cameras, and rarely in front being focused on and doted on. I love to put mothers in front of the camera with their babies and children, and watch the magic just simply unfold. Kids become relaxed, mothers lean into their child’s hair, they giggle together and smile so naturally – to me it’s like watching magic happen. One reason I fell in love with my studio location is that I knew the potential for gorgeous motherhood sessions was unparalleled. The natural warm light falling throw the big vintage pocket door windows lends itself to this mixture of grand and simple, and keeps the focus right on the love I’m photographing.
I photographed this beautiful baby and mother (my own nephew and sister!) for his newborn session and was so excited to have them fly back from Florida for some beautiful sitter and motherhood session portraits. I asked mom to wear a neutral white dress, which I think keeps the focus on the baby and the mama and the interactions between them, instead of distracting the eye to bright bold patterns in clothing. I love the sitter session age for portraits because it is the first time babies are sitting up to check out the world around them, and there is such a variety of poses we can do with baby alone. From sitting up to laying down on their belly to leaning against pillows and sitting in chairs and on blankets – it’s the sweetest milestone! I love how happy babies are at this stage too which huge big amazing smiles for me. They havnt usually hit the separation anxiety phase which can start around the first year, so it’s an awesome time to capture that baby stage but before they’re off and crawling and running and upset that they’re without their parents for a few images. This session was one of my favorites in my studio yet, and I loved having these two favorite people with me for this beautiful session.
